My favorite DB's

Some of you misunderstood the discussion board.  You were suppose to talk about *HOW* art reflects culture; not tell me, "Art reflects culture."  You needed to supply examples from what you've studied.

Sarah Freitag did a great job:
See below:
Personally, I believe that art reveals the side of culture and society that cannot be put into words. The art we have seen this semester are perfect examples of the emotions, along with the traditions, that can be portrayed through this form of expression. Bright, vibrant colors exemplify a festive culture, while darker shades may show the hardships in which some societies have had to endure. At the same time, the advancement in art and styles can help someone from an outside culture to better understand where a specific society is when it comes to technology and moving forward. There are just so many unspoken concepts that can only be revealed through art!

And Kristen Blocker, who gave us an example from what she learned:
See below:
Honestly, I have never known much about art, so I had very little interest in it. The activities we have done have really showed me a lot. One way I understand Spanish culture a little better is the type of art they have. For example, when we research Day of the Dead they had all kinds of art to show respect and kind of explain their traditions. Its like the saying a picture says a thousand words. Well that's art. A picture of how they feel explains what their culture means to them and helps you see it from their perspective.

Great job, girls!

Checklist- Due This Week!

It's a very busy week.  Use your time in class, and arrange with your teacher, if you need time in the lab outside of class time.

  • Almost done with projects...

These projects look great!  I'll be done with projects tomorrow evening...if you see a note from me in the submission section, please read.  Some of you had broken links and I couldn't open it, and a few of you need to call me so we can discuss the project you submitted, so I can get clarity on some things.

Check your grades with your campuses!

How can you make your grade higher?

Do ALL your Rosetta Stone lessons from here on out!  Nothing is worth more points after this week, than those Rosetta Stone lessons.  (Example:  Speaking Activity is worth 35 pts., but Rosetta Stone is worth 100 pts.).  Get it?  Good. :)

    Wednesday, October 24, 2012

    Grades are updated

The following grades have been updated:

    1.  Rosetta Stone Check (100 pts)- first 10 lessons of Unit 2
    2.  Rosetta Stone Check (100 pts)- first 20 lessons of Unit 2
    3.  Discussion Board (20 pts.)- Day of Dead Video
    4.  Reading Comprehension (15 pts.)- Origens of Hispanic Culture
    5.  Reading Comprehension Quiz (5 pts.)

For a total of 240 points so far for Module 2.

    PROJECT ADVICE!

You need to re-read the project guidelines...some of you are getting carried away and not doing what the directions say...it must be a well-researched recipe that is authentic, from a Spanish-speaking country...it can NOT BE TEX-MEX.  I want to know what site it came from, what country it comes from, etc.

Go back and read the project guidelines and make sure you are doing all it says.

    Monday, October 22, 2012

    Example of video project...

This doesn't include the sentences, (which are a required part of the project), but shows the video...I don't need a long 'ole video...just short little clips.  I hope this helps.

If you don't have a phone or way to film little clips, then pictures that document the whole cooking thing, is great, but you'll need at least 6 pics of the process.  :)

Discussion boards and RS grade updates by Mon. PM

I found missing discussion boards...if you didn't post your discussion board post to my original one, it was in a different place.  But it's all good now and your grades are waiting there, to show off for you. :)

Rosetta Stone is taking me about 5 minutes to load each page, and I have 47 of you kiddos, so I'm going to run a de-bugging program on my computer, hoping that will do the trick, which will take overnight.  I'll update your grades with the last Rosetta Stone check in the AM.

Two items due this week! :)

Hello my little ninjas.  :)  Thank you for your patience on the Rosetta Stones...I'm working through them in the order they were submitted to me, and will have your grades by the morning.  :)

This week you have 2 things due:
         1.  Your reading comprehension
         2.  Your reading comprehension quiz

REMEMBER, NO POINTS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANSWERS THAT WERE ENTIRELY TRANSLATED BY A TRANSLATOR!  (And yes, I can very easily tell).  If by the morning, you have no grade, that will be why.  I want to help you with your Spanish and would rather have an answer you tried your best at, so I can identify your problem areas and help you, which is much better than trying to tell google why their translator stinks so badly. :)

ALL GRADES ARE WITH YOUR TEACHER

All the grades have been given to your campus facilitator.  The GVS site is not updated in time for the grading cycle, so please refer to the spreadsheet I sent to your teacher 5 minutes ago, for your updated grade.

READ THE NEWS FEED TITLED, "Bonus- what you all need to know."

***BONUS-What all students need to know!

There has been some confusion about the point total and bonus.  There is no error in the 600 total.  The 4th Rosetta Stone check was only for 3 lessons, (totalling 30 points), but they would get double points for it, totally 60 points, instead of 30, hence, "bonus."  Perhaps the word "BONUS" deterred any of the kids from doing it, so I took the average column down to 540 points...this time.

***Important:  In the future, please know that the  BONUS is not an optional assignment, but you do get double the points for completing it in its entirety, and 0 points, (which does hurt you), if you don't do them.  I won't be able to adjust it in the future.  I hope this helps, and sorry for the confusion.  Please call me if you have any questions.

Grady, Tahoka, Northside, O'Donnell & Golson!

Your *updated* grades have been sent to your campus facilitator.  Please check with them for your updated grade.  NOTE:  Grades in GVS are not current, and have not been updated.  Only the spreadsheet I have sent your campus facilitator have your updated grades.

    GRADES*******

Updated grades are being sent to your campus today.  Anything you send me today and tomorrow does NOT count, because there is no time to grade that.  They should have been done by the due date.  If you notice you have a zero for something that you KNOW you did, you need to:

    1.  Tell your teacher to email me at holamrschurch@gmail.com with your name, the assignment in question, and how you sent it, (my email, GVS, text msg).

If you email me asking me your grade or if I received something, I haven't responded because I'm too busy grading your make-up/late/missing work to stop and respond.  I think you would rather me get your stuff graded, right?  :)  All grades will be updated at your campus (check with your teacher), by this afternoon.

    Monday, October 1, 2012

    IMPORTANT: grades and re-submissions

I'm calculating grades as we speak, adding in the bonus points.  Your grades should be sent to your campus facilitator by the end of the day.

MUY IMPORTANTE:  If you didn't turn something in on time, (let's say your glogster project or speaking assignment), then you turned it in and still don't see a grade...it's because I don't know you turned it in late.  You must send me a message or an email that tells me I need to go back and check the system for your late assignment, so that you get credit.  A 70, is wayyyyy better than a 0.  I always tell my students, "Would you rather have $70 or $0?"  Let me know if you did something after the due date so that I can check.

    ***Rosetta Stone Tech Help Number***

If you are having tech issues with Rosetta Stone, (it won't let you do the speaking sections, or any other error), immediately call the Rosetta Stone tech people, so they can ask you questions about what you're seeing to help you diagnose the issue.  They are REALLY GOOD at fixing the problems lickety-split, (usually within 5 minutes, if they have you on the phone).  They would really prefer to be contacted directly so that they can assess the situation and machine in use.

Write this  number down and tape it to your machine, or onto the desk next to your machine, (or put it into your cell phone, so you'll have them on speed dial). :)

    *************FOUR ITEMS DUE THIS WEEK!**********

I used all the stars, because headings like that, always get my attention when I'm searching for cool stuff on Craigslist, or eBay. :)

You have 4 items due this week, starting with Monday!  You can always complete things in advance, if you like.  If you know you will be out on Friday, please arrange to take your test with your on-campus facilitator, a day early.  See the items that are due this week, below:

Mrs. Church has no voice. :(

I got that "back-to-school bronchitis," and probably a few other things going on with the throat/lungs/ears.  I was hoping that I would wake up a little more healed than yesterday, but alas, my voice is totally gone.  I'm heading to the doctor and then home to rest for the day.  If you have questions that need immediate assistance, please text me on my phone and I can reply. 972-352-0333 or send me an email at holamrschurch@gmail.com .  Otherwise, I'll be back in action tomorrow morning. :)

    Glogster MUST BE IN SPANISH!!!

I'm seeing projects with English.  Pardon me kiddos, but isn't this a Spanish class. :)  Also remember, that abuse of online translators, (refer to your orientation activity about this), will result in a zero.  Also the reason why you might not see a grade for your reading comprehension assignment.  You may look up a word, but it is MUY OBVIO when you use an online translator.  Those don't translate correctly, or according to the level you're on.  Don't be the person who's project I use as an example of what not to do.

    1.  Project is entirely in Spanish
    2.  You only used a translator for words, not for sentences.
    3.  HAVE FUN! :)

    Glogster Project

If your school has not blocked Glogster, use regular glogster, (not the edu version).

If you school HAS BLOCKED Glogster, use the edu version.  In order to use this version, you'll need a code.  It is 31766D.  You can also just go to this link to create your account.  http://edu.glogster.com/register?edu_type=student

DO NOT USE POWERPOINT, unless your school has blocked both sites.  But know that your powerpoint will be graded on the same scale as the glogster, so it better sing, dance, have videos, pictures, animated pictures and cool backgrounds, just like the glogster does.  :)

    Friday, September 14, 2012

    Your Glogster Project

You do not need a code from me if you use the regular glogster program.  Create your own glogster account; it's free.  Have fun. :)

    Speech Problems?

Lots of people in Texas are reporting issues with the speech recognition system.  This is a glitch.  If you aren't receiving these errors, count yourself lucky.  But if you are, please do the following:

    1.  Message me what the issue is, so I can have RS create a tech help ticket for your login.
    2.  Only if you are having these issues, and you keep trying and it won't work, skip it for now, and keep working in RS so that you still have the required 10 completed lessons.   You can come back to the skipped lessons next week, when the problem is resolved.

No matter what, you still must have 10 lessons complete though.  I hope this helps, and we're working on the problem.  Thanks for your patience. :)

    Due dates this week

    This week's assignments are:
    1.  Wednesday, Sept. 12: The next 10 lessons in RS, (so the first 20 lessons should be complete)
    2.  Thursday, Sept. 13:  Reading Comprehension Activity- Para que sirve hablar una lengua extranjera
    3.  Thursday, Sept. 13:  Reading Comprehension Quiz- MUST DO WITH TEACHER PRESENT

    Tuesday, September 4, 2012

    Rosetta Stone Due Tomorrow

You are to complete the first 10 out of 33 lessons, by tomorrow.  If you will need an extension, I need a message from you that you need an extension, the reason and if you will be able to complete it by Friday.  Thanks kiddos!

    Monday, September 3, 2012

    Two big deadlines this week

    1.  Rosetta Stone- September 5th (the first 10 lessons on level 4 must be done).  Don't forget to send the message in Spanish that you have completed them.
    2.  Discussion Board- September 7th (Picasso...remember, to receive credit for everything, you must also post thoughtful responses to two other posts).

Have a great week NINJAS! :)

    Login Issues?

If you have tried to login to Rosetta Stone and are having issues, please message/call/text/email me today, so I can get you on a roll. :)

    Thursday, August 30, 2012

Are you on Level 4? You should be!

Do not start on Unit 1, Level 1...that is for Spanish 1!!!!  You are suppose to start on Unit 1, Level 4.  You will not receive credit for work prior to level 4.  If you have already started in a place that you weren't suppose to, don't worry about it.  Just hop on the train with the other kids that probably did the same thing and go ahead and start on Level 4. :)

    Rosetta Stone Day!

Hola amigos!  Try and login to Rosetta Stone Today.  If you have any login issues, please let me know.  Start with UNIT 1, LEVEL 4.

    Monday, August 27, 2012
